Velvet Curtains and Velvet Roman Blinds

To add an elegant look to a room in your home, such as the sitting room or bedroom, consider having custom made velvet curtains or Roman blinds made from a velvet fabric or even a velour fabric.

Velvet is a heavy fabric which will provide your windows with complete coverage from sunlight when closed – which is excellent if you have trouble sleeping and the made to measure velvet curtains or velvet roman blinds are for your bedroom.

Curtains, blinds and velour curtains can be designed in a range of styles such as single pleat, eyelet and tab top so that they can be hung from a curtain rod. Alternatively, for a more sumptuous look they can also be attached to a track hidden under a pelmet to give a more elegant look to your surroundings.

In general you’ll find there is a larger selection of made to measure curtains than there are from the high street.

At Curtains Made Simple we have a number of velvet or velour fabrics to choose from. Some of our personal favourite collections are: Academy, Majestic, Palladium and Regency Velvets.

We also like the Velvet Revolution collection from Andrew Martin:

Use Velvet for Other Home Furnishings

Velvet, which is a hard wearing fabric, can also look incredible when used for a bed spread or throw. Velvet cushions are also a luxurious touch and capable of adding a bit of luxury to your old sofa. It’s also an excellent fabric when used for upholstery such as brightening up an old chair or seat covers.

How is Velvet Produced?

Velvet is what we’d describe as ‘woven and tufted.’ The threads in the material are very even and have a short very dense pile while gives the fabric its smooth and very distinctive texture. Crushed velvet is when the pile is deliberately pressed in different directions or mechanically twisted while wet, giving the fabric a rather lustrous appearance.

The earliest examples of velvet were produced from silk. However today you can also buy cotton velvet and velvet in a range of man-made fibres such as rayon and polyester. Imitation velvet (known as velveteen) is also popular and derived from either cotton or a combination of rayon and silk. Hammered velvet is also crushed and has a dappled look. Chiffon is actually a form of transparent velvet.

Decorating With Velvet

If you’re going to invest in tie backs to match your velvet curtains then a nice touch is to have them in a contrasting colour to help your main velvet curtains really stand out.

Velvet can look particularly sumptuous in darker colours such as burgundy, black, purple and deep red. Patterned velvet is available today but by far the most popular choice in velvet curtains or Roman blinds is to have them in the one colour.

How to Clean Velvet Curtains

Because of its distinctive pile velvet can be difficult to clean and, in fact, must always be dry cleaned. However, this is easily achieved today thanks to more modern dry cleaning technology and the results really can be as good as new. However on this note, it’s as well to mention that although velvet curtains look great in any room in the home, they’re not really suitable for the kitchen where there is a greater tendency for them to be marked and retain cooking smells.

Small stains can be alleviated by brushing them with a minimal amount of liquid soap in warm water. Remember to brush it in the direction of the weave however. Once dry any remaining soap can simply be brushed or wiped away by hand.

Your custom made curtains from Curtains Made Simple may arrive at your home with creases due to the folding during postage. If the creases don’t fall out after one week or so they can be removed via gently steaming them.
