Voile Curtains: Sheer Sophistication

Remember those white net curtains everyone seemed to have in the 1950s and 1960s? Thankfully white net seems like a fabric of yesteryear now that we have the availability of voile curtains.

Voile with its transparent and sheer effect is a much more luxurious and attractive window fabric than its coarser net predecessor. It also comes in much prettier colours and shades to the extent you should be able to find a voile curtain material to match the interior of a current room in your home without any real difficulty, such is the variety available today.

What Are Voile Fabrics Made From?

Believe it or not voile material is actually derived from a net curtain fabric of cotton origin. High grade voile curtain material consists of highly twisted yarns. The beauty of voile is that it drapes extremely well and as such is a perfect material for curtains.

Here at Curtains Made Simple we have seven impressive voile curtain collections for you to take a look through. These are: Arcadia, Boheme, Fresco, Lino Sheers, Minerals, and Zingaro.

The Benefits of Voile Curtains

As well as being attractive to look at and lovely to touch, they also have a functional role, of course. For instance they can instantly add privacy to a room when hung alongside thicker custom made curtains. Yet, at the same time they will also allow in natural light. In order to have both a voile curtain and a heavier set of curtains it’s necessary to invest in a double rod. Either that or the voile curtains can be placed on a tension rod which is then just attached to the sides of the window frame itself.

They are also incredibly useful for those who enjoy growing plants indoors. That’s because placing a flower pot or herbs etc on a window sill with a voile curtain attached to the frame, means the plants will benefit from the daylight but won’t be damaged by direct contact with the light, which can often prove too strong for a plant.

At the same time, by blocking out the light, they will also protect your furniture and other textiles in the room from fading due to the sun’s intense glare.

Adjusting the Light With Voile Curtains

Because voile curtains are so light and flimsy, they are able to fold and gather which means that if you want more light in a room this can be achieved by simply widening the gathers in the voile curtains so that they stretch straight from either side of the window.

Because they’re so thin, it’s also possible to ‘layer’ voile curtains and vary the look of your window ie put up two different shades on the same frame.

Washing Your Voile Curtains

Thankfully voile curtains actually wash like ribbon. Not that you’ll have to wash them that often but when you do feel as if they need a clean simply pop them in the washing machine and watch them dry in no time at all.
